Hi Everyone,

WELL DONE to everyone a GREAT week and a FANTASTIC SPORTS DAY! Thank-you for your patience as we had to use our reserve date of Tuesday this year. Unfortunately the weather is the one part of the day we cannot plan and following the rain the field conditions were too wet. We had a great afternoon on Tuesday and I was so impressed with how all the children participated, we hope you enjoyed it too!

‘Little Bernie’s Got Talent’ took place on Wednesday afternoon and it was a WONDERFUL show! Our Judges had a really tough job- there was so much talent and confident performances WELL DONE to everyone who took part! The winners all receive medal and we will having our celebration lunch on the 12th July.

Our new Reception children visited on Thursday morning, it was lovely to meet them all again and see them becoming familiar with their new surroundings. We look forward to welcoming them in September!

Our Year 6 children were busy with their Induction days at their new high schools on Thursday and Friday so all classes had a transition session in their new class on Thursday morning. Miss Shaw our new Class 1 teacher joined us and had the chance to meet the children and become familiar with our school and staff. Miss Shaw thoroughly enjoyed her visit and she will be coming again before the end of term.

I had the opportunity to join our Year 6 pupils at St Joseph’s on Friday afternoon for a special service and reflection. The children were great and it was lovely to join them with the staff from St Joseph’s and other primary Heads. WELL DONE Year 6!

The children enjoyed their visits to their new classes and looked very much at home as I popped to see them – WELL DONE EVERYONE!

Annual written reports for every child were sent home this week so I hope you were pleased with them. I was very impressed with them all when I read them and made my comments. WELL DONE EVERYONE!

Hi Everyone,

WELL DONE to Year 3 who completed their first week of the swimming programme! We have had great reports and the children are making good progress. They will continue this week to complete the whole programme.

More CONGRATULATIONS for Class 3 for Year 3 Sacramental Programme children who were FANTASTIC yesterday when they received their First Holy Communion. They all looked beautiful and were so reverent and sensible as they received this very special gift for the first time. The children have prepared well and took everything in their stride! We celebrated and prayed with them in assembly this morning. I reminded everyone that the Eucharist is a gift from Jesus that we can receive all our lives.

Thank-you to the parents who attended the SRE meeting on Wednesday. Mrs Grant and I shared the resources and talked through the programme for each year group. Every class will be covering their unit for the programme this coming week. We have used the programme successfully each year and it is delivered in a child friendly way and incorporates spiritual reflection and prayer. We find the children enjoy it and each year their knowledge is built upon to prepare them for the next stage of their lives. Your children may ask questions at home about aspects of the unit they are covering.

We are busy recruiting for our new Year 1 teacher for September so we will let you know when we have successfully appointed so we can introduce them!

We had a Quality Assurance visit on Thursday requested by Governors and the Leadership Team. Two School Improvement Professionals visited every class, met with pupils and the Leadership Team. It was a busy day but the feedback was excellent! The visit recognised that we continue to be a ‘good’ school that has made improvement since our last inspection in 2017 and identified ways forward towards ‘outstanding’. This is a vital part of our continued school self-evaluation and the opportunity to validate our judgements. The School Improvement Professionals were in agreement with our judgements.

Hi Everyone,

Welcome back and I hope you all had a lovely and blessed Easter, the weather was certainly in our favour! A GREAT start to the summer term and all the children seem to have grown! Great to be back!

We had a FANTASTIC day on Wednesday as it was our history enrichment day and every class investigated and researched a different period in our British history. The children were so enthusiastic and focussed on finding out new historical facts and sharing those in our assembly at the end of the day. GREAT WORK EVERYONE – WELL DONE! We are now budding historians!

Sporting News

  • Our Y5/6 girls football team had a football match against Lostock school on Tuesday night although not a victory – great team spirit! WELL DONE GIRLS!
  • Y6 Dodgeball team took part in a tournament on Thursday night at St Joseph’s High School and played really well! WELL DONE DODGEBALL TEAM!
  • Cross Country: We now have the results from the Championships this year and all the children who took part did really well – THANK-YOU AND WELL DONE!
  • Our Y3/4 Girls team cam 3rd out of the 21 schools that took part – FANTASTIC result Y3/4 Girls Team! WELL DONE!

Here at St Bernard’s we have always had an excellent record with Cross Country and it is wonderful to see that continue in our younger KS2 runners. Cross Country is a challenging event and often in poor weather conditions so it is great for stamina and resilience! We take part in lots of inter-school sport competitions over the year so the children can experience different sports,  develop their skills and foster good team spirit.

This half term is a busy one and slightly shorter than last half term so we have lots to fit in! Most importantly Y2 and Y6 will be undertaking their SATs (Statutory Assessment Tests), these are national assessments at the end of each key stage and the results are published nationally. Year 2 SATs are delivered in a very different way to Y6 due to the age of the children. Year 2 assessments are done over a period of time but Year 6 have a national timetable and sit formal tests over a period of 4 days.

Please note Year 6 parents that Year 6 SATs will take place from the 13th-16th May.

Parents receive their child’s SATs results with the annual written report at the end of this term (July 2019). If you do have any other questions regarding SATs please see your child’s class teacher.

The children are all working hard and we want them to feel prepared, confident, comfortable so they can do their best.

In our assembly this week we reflected on the joy of Jesus’ resurrection and shouted ‘Alleluia’ at the top of our voices to rejoice! We asked in our prayers that we share the joy of Christ’s resurrection in our lives by loving and caring for one another. We also prayed for peace in our world and remembered all the people in Sri Lanka.
